Tips for Driving Safely in the Rain

One of the most common yet dangerous conditions to be driving in is rain.  This is especially true in the fall season, when rainstorms can be frequent and unpredictable, and wet leaves are just as dangerous as black ice.  Whether a light drizzle or a flooding downpour, driving in the rain can be difficult; controlling your vehicle requires skill, experience, and caution.

Regardless of how long you have been driving, it is always good to remember the driving tips necessary to keep yourself safe in rainy weather.

Slow Down

You should never speed or drive recklessly, especially in the rain.  Most traffic will be slowed down, so you must also slow down.  If you go too fast, you may begin to hydroplane, which is a dangerous situation where the vehicle travels on a sheet of water.  Slowing down helps you assess your surroundings and better control your vehicle.

Avoid Driving Altogether

Pay attention to the weather reports; if it is safer to stay where you are or at home, then it is best to do so if possible.  If you get caught in a storm while driving, find an underpass or a safe area to park and wait out the storm.

Use Your Lights

When wipers are on, your exterior lights should be on, too.  Not only will it improve your ability to see the road, but you will also be more visible to other drivers.

Do Not Use Cruise Control

Cruise control is dangerous in rainy weather.  When in wet conditions, a safe driver would want to slow down and take their foot off the accelerator.  However, the vehicle will accelerate when cruise control is on to stay at the set speed.  Furthermore, a driver needs to be focused in the rain, as cruise control can sometimes cause your mind to wander.

Practice Defensive Driving

Defensive driving is beneficial in the rain.  To do so, always allow enough room to stop between yourself and other cars.  When it rains, allow extra room to stop, giving you enough time to react.

Stay Away From Flooded Areas

If you know which roads flood frequently, avoiding them in the rain will be best.  Just a few inches of water are enough to cause your car to stall or lift your car off the ground altogether, putting yourself and your passengers in a hazardous situation.

Handling a Skid

If your car begins to skid, remain calm, turn the wheel in the direction you want to travel, and take your foot off the gas.

Maintain Your Car

Prevention is sometimes the best way to stay safe in the rain.  Ensure your wipers are not worn, replace them when necessary, and have your tires and brakes checked regularly.  Always check your tire pressures every so often; you may lose control of your car even if your tire pressures are slightly off.

Reduce Distractions

You need to be focused entirely while driving in the rain to help avoid a car accident , eliminating any distractions if possible.  Stay off your phone, and keep your eyes on the road, turn down the radio if necessary, and let your passengers know to keep the conversations to a minimum.
